| What started as snow quickly transitioned to sleet and freezing rain, creating a solid sheet of ice across our community. With temperatures staying below freezing through this week and into next, that ice isn’t going anywhere—it continues to harden, refreeze, and remain extremely slick.
Last night, our volunteers responded to assist citizens who found themselves in a dangerous situation. While in their backyard, they and their dog slid down a hill and were unable to climb back up. The ice was so thick and slick that there was no footing and no traction to safely ascend the slope.
With the assistance of Rescue 1514 and Engine 1509, firefighters deployed a rope rescue system, allowing crews to safely reach the citizens and pull them back up to safety. Thankfully, this incident ended well—but it easily could have turned out much differently.
What if there hadn’t been a phone to call for help? Prolonged exposure to freezing temperatures, combined with the inability to climb out or stay warm, can quickly become life-threatening.
⚠️ Please use extreme caution on icy surfaces: • Avoid steep or sloped areas • Keep pets secured • Wear footwear with traction • Stay inside when conditions are unsafe
Your Stafford Volunteer Fire Department is always here for you—but your awareness and caution are the first line of defense.
