🐾🌡️ EXTREME HEAT IS COMING — HELP KEEP OUR FOUR-LEGGED FAMILY MEMBERS SAFE!

🌡️🐾

As temperatures climb this week, remember that the heat can be just as dangerous for our pets as it is for people. Dogs and cats can quickly suffer from heat exhaustion or heat stroke, especially when left outside, exercised during the hottest part of the day, or left inside a vehicle—even for just a few minutes.

Here are a few simple ways to keep your pets safe:
🐶 Provide plenty of fresh, cool water.
🌳 Keep pets indoors or in the shade whenever possible.
🚶 Walk your pets early in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are cooler.
🚗 Never leave a pet in a parked vehicle, even with the windows cracked.
🐾 Remember: If the pavement is too hot for the back of your hand for 7 seconds, it’s too hot for your pet’s paws.

Know the signs of heat-related illness:
• Excessive panting
• Drooling
• Weakness or lethargy
• Vomiting
• Bright red gums or tongue
• Collapse

If your pet shows these signs, move them to a cool area immediately, offer cool (not ice-cold) water, and seek veterinary care as soon as possible.

If you see an animal that appears to be in distress due to the heat:
📞 Stafford County Animal Control: 540-658-7387
📞 Stafford County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch: 540-658-4400

Our pets depend on us to keep them safe. With a little planning and awareness, we can help ensure every member of the family stays healthy during this week’s extreme heat.

Stay cool. Stay hydrated. Protect your pets. ❤️🐾
